Total endoprosthesis of the first metatarsophalangeal joint – Arthorosurface ToeMotion® Total Toe System.
Previous treatments for a painful, stiff toe that results from degenerative changes of the first metatarsophalangeal joint are most commonly joint shaving and cheilectomy of the head of the first metatarsal bone with a corrective osteotomy. In advanced osteoarthritic lesions, half endoprostheses are used, the lifespan of which is quite short and does not exceed 7 years. The definitive treatment was and still is the stiffening of the first midfoot and toe joint. This modality is good for people with low physical activity and allows for normal function
in daily activities.
Nowadays, people over 60-70 years of age are engaged in quite intense physical activity, which is greatly reduced with a stiffened toe. Advances in joint endoprosthesis have made it possible to create a total endoprosthesis of the first metatarsophalangeal joint, which has a lifespan of up to several decades in functional tests, similar to that of hip or knee endoprostheses.
The new four-piece endoprosthesis of the first metatarsophalangeal joint allows full mobility of the joint and long-term durability, allowing full physical activity.
