Arthrodesis is a method of surgical treatment of advanced osteoarthritis of the upper and lower extremities. This procedure involves removing the remnants of the joint cartilage and fusing the bone. MED&CARE offers the Motec® arthrodesis system. This solution was developed to allow the modification of the Motec® total wrist prosthesis into wrist arthrodesis.
Osteoarthritis of the wrist and hand is a very common ailment of the musculoskeletal system. Its cause is a disorder of the quantity and quality of the articular cartilage. The disease is mainly manifested by pain, stiffness and numbness. A long-term inflammatory process taking place in the joints can also lead to joint deformity, disrupting the mobility of the wrist and hand.
Currently, there is no drug on the market that inhibits the development of the condition. A common treatment for osteoarthritis of the wrist and hand is surgery. The type of surgery depends on the severity of the disease and the patient’s clinical condition. The final method is arthrodesis, or stiffening of the joint. This procedure is used for patients who cannot undergo endoprosthesis implantation or other repair or corrective surgery for various reasons. It is a method of surgical treatment of advanced osteoarthritis. It involves removing the remnants of the joint cartilage and fusing the bone. For the patient, it involves loss of mobility in the joint, but in certain situations, when other treatments have failed, it is the only method of getting rid of chronic pain.
MED&CARE offers the Motec® wrist arthrodesis system. The Motec® Wrist Arthrodesis System was developed to allow the modification of the Motec® total wrist prosthesis into wrist arthrodesis. This system is based on replacing the moving parts of the wrist prosthesis (acetabulum, head) while retaining the previously implanted stems, resulting in the possibility of preserving a significant portion of the patient’s own bone. Depending on the case of the patient requiring arthrodesis, we have three different solutions available based on previously implanted elements of the Motec® prosthesis. This makes the procedure of prosthesis modification for arthrodesis a minimally invasive procedure, providing stable and permanent fixation of the joint.
Three minimally invasive solutions are available: Double Taper, Metacarpal Taper&Radius Connector and Metacarpal Nail&Radius Connector.
