Poland’s first and Europe’s second Arthrosurface® shoulder joint endoprosthesis procedure

On October 9, 2018, the first Arthrosurface® shoulder joint endoprosthesis procedure in Poland and the second in Europe took place at the University Hospital in Krakow.

Arthrosurface® for the shoulder joint offers a stemless solution – the OVOMotion™ Shoulder Arthroplasty System.

The prosthesis helps preserve most of the humeral head bone while repairing any damage to the acetabulum. Unlike a total shoulder joint replacement, this solution does not limit future weight-bearing activities. The procedure allows patients to regain and continue their active lifestyles and daily routines.

The patient operated on today suffered from ischemic necrosis of the humeral head. During the 3-4 months before the operation, there was an increase in pain in the arm, which occurred both at rest and during movement.

To date, more than 100,000 patients have received Arthrosurface® implants. Some of them have been working for 10 years.

The Arthrosurface® implant stands out from other available solutions. Below are its most important features and functionalities:

  • custom sizing and fitting to the size and shape of the patient’s joint – intraoperative “custom made”
  • removal of much less cartilage and bone than in traditional joint replacement – the implant is tailored to the size and shape of the patient’s bone.
  • “In Lay” technique, i.e. sinking the implant into the joint so that it faces the surrounding cartilage, rather than being on the surface – thanks to this technique, the pressure exerted on the tissues does not change – this restores the natural anatomy of the joint
  • placing the implant deep, rather than on the surface, exposes the joint to less stress
  • preservation of the motility and primary structures of the joint, thus no irreversible changes are made
  • rapid recovery and return to work
  • shorter recovery time and return to work faster than after total joint replacement
  • HemiCAP® shoulder implants do not overload the joint like traditional total joint replacement
  • patients can lift weights as desired, without restrictions.
